LMS development company for learning platforms people finish
We build custom learning management systems, course platforms for creators and learning tools that plug into the platform you already use, with assessment, progress tracking, payments and accessibility designed in.

Short answer
LMS development covers course authoring and delivery, quizzes and assessment, progress tracking, payments and reporting, either as a custom platform or as tools added to an existing LMS. Innovation Insight built an embeddable quiz widget for StoryLearning that runs inside WordPress, Thinkific and Teachable, and redesigned the core product experience of Vonza, a platform for course creators. A custom learning platform MVP costs $15k to $40k over 8 to 14 weeks, and a full platform $50k to $150k+.

Build, extend or embed?
Most organisations that ask for an LMS do not need to build one from nothing. Off-the-shelf platforms handle standard courses well. Custom work pays off in three situations: the learning experience is your product and has to feel different, your course business has outgrown a hosted tool, or you need one capability your current platform lacks. We start by working out which of these you are in, because the cheapest good answer is often an addition to what you already run.
| Approach | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Use a hosted LMS as it is | Standard courses, small team | Limited control over experience and data |
| Embed custom tools in your current LMS | You need better quizzes, practice or interactivity without migrating | Bound by what the host platform lets you embed |
| Extend an open-source LMS | Institutions that need standards support and their own hosting | Upgrades need care; the interface is harder to make your own |
| Custom learning platform | Learning is the product; unique pedagogy, pricing or audience | Highest build cost; you own the roadmap |
What we build
- Course structure and authoring: courses, modules, lessons, drip schedules and versioning.
- Video and audio delivery: on-demand and live sessions with cost-aware streaming.
- Assessment: multiple choice, text input, matching, flashcards, timed tests, scoring and feedback.
- Progress and motivation: completion tracking, streaks, reminders, certificates.
- Commerce: one-off course sales, subscriptions, bundles, coupons and instructor payouts.
- Roles: learner, instructor, administrator and, for schools, parent.
- Reporting: engagement, completion and assessment results for instructors and administrators.
- Integrations: single sign-on, LTI, SCORM and xAPI content, video conferencing, email and payment tools.
- Mobile apps in Flutter or React Native for offline study and notifications.
Learning products we have shipped
- StoryLearning: an embeddable quiz widget for a language-learning company, built so interactive practice could run inside the platforms it already used. It has six question types, audio playback for pronunciation, fuzzy answer matching that tolerates typos, progress tracking and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility. It ships under 50 KB gzipped and embeds four ways, including WordPress, with a serverless Node.js API on MongoDB Atlas. First embed went live six weeks after the brief.
- Vonza: an all-in-one platform where creators sell courses, run communities and manage members. We redesigned the core user journeys, built a shared component library and integrated new modules with staged rollouts.
Standards and compliance
| Topic | What it means | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| LTI | A standard for launching an external tool from inside an LMS with single sign-on and grade return | Selling to universities and schools that run Canvas, Moodle or Blackboard |
| SCORM and xAPI | Formats for packaged course content and for recording learning activity | Corporate training and importing existing content |
| WCAG accessibility | Keyboard use, screen readers, captions, contrast and reduced motion | Every learning product; required by many institutions |
| FERPA, COPPA and GDPR | Rules on student records, children's data and personal data | Schools, products for under-13s and learners in Europe |
What it costs
| Scope | Range | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and design sprint | $3k to $8k | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Embeddable tool or integration for an existing LMS | Time and materials at $25 to $49 an hour | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Custom learning platform MVP | $15k to $40k | 8 to 14 weeks |
| Full platform with commerce, live sessions, mobile apps and reporting | $50k to $150k+ | 4 to 8 months |
| Support and improvements | $1.5k to $8k per month | Monthly |
How we work
- Discovery: learners, instructors, content, business model and what your current platform cannot do.
- Design: the learner and instructor journeys in Figma, tested with real users.
- Build in two-week sprints with a staging environment loaded with real course content.
- Pilot with one course or cohort, measure completion and fix what gets in the way.
- Roll out, then improve from engagement data under a retainer or dedicated team.

Questions we get asked a lot.
Should we build a custom LMS or use an existing one?
Use an existing platform for standard courses. Build custom when the learning experience is your product, when your course business has outgrown a hosted tool, or when you need capabilities it cannot provide. Often the best first step is a custom tool embedded in your current platform.
Can you add features to the LMS we already use?
Yes. We built an embeddable quiz widget for StoryLearning that runs inside WordPress, Thinkific, Teachable and other platforms through a script, an iframe or a plugin.
Do you support SCORM, xAPI and LTI?
Yes. We integrate LTI for launching tools inside institutional systems and can work with SCORM and xAPI content where your catalogue requires it.
How do you make a learning platform accessible?
We design and test to WCAG: keyboard navigation, screen-reader labels, captions, colour contrast and reduced-motion support.
Can instructors sell courses and get paid?
Yes. We build one-off sales, subscriptions and bundles with Stripe, and instructor payouts where the platform hosts several teachers.
How long does a custom LMS take?
A focused MVP takes 8 to 14 weeks after discovery. A full platform with live sessions, mobile apps and reporting takes four to eight months.
