Fractional CTO services for founders who need senior technical leadership, part-time
A senior technical lead who owns your architecture, hiring, security and delivery decisions a few days a month, at a fraction of a full-time CTO's cost, and who can call on a full engineering team when the work needs it.

Short answer
A fractional CTO is an experienced technology leader who works with your company part-time, usually a set number of days a month, to make architecture, hiring, security and vendor decisions. Innovation Insight's fractional CTO retainers cost $1,100 to $1,600 a month for advisory (four days), $2,200 to $3,100 for part-time (eight days) and $3,400 to $4,700 for interim leadership (twelve days), delivered by a lead engineer with eight or more years in production systems.

Who needs a fractional CTO
- Non-technical founders choosing a stack, a first engineer or an agency, and needing someone on their side of the table.
- Startups between funding rounds that need investor-grade architecture and a technical roadmap before hiring a full-time CTO.
- Established businesses whose software is built by vendors and nobody internal can judge the quality, cost or risk.
- Companies that lost their technical lead and need continuity while they recruit.
What a fractional CTO does
| Area | What you get |
|---|---|
| Architecture | Technology choices, system design reviews, build-versus-buy decisions, documented architecture decisions |
| Roadmap | A technical roadmap tied to business goals, with estimates you can take to a board or investor |
| Team | Hiring plans, job descriptions, interviews, onboarding and engineering standards |
| Vendors | Reviewing agency proposals and code, holding vendors to quality and schedule |
| Security and compliance | Access control, backups, incident response, and readiness for SOC 2, HIPAA or GDPR questions |
| Due diligence | Technical answers for investors or acquirers, and fixing what diligence finds |
| Delivery | Sprint cadence, release process, metrics and unblocking the team |
What it costs
| Engagement | Time each month | Monthly retainer | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advisory | 4 days | $1,100 to $1,600 | Founders who need decisions reviewed and a sounding board |
| Part-time CTO | 8 days | $2,200 to $3,100 | Startups building or rebuilding a product with a small team |
| Interim CTO | 12 days | $3,400 to $4,700 | Companies without a technical leader during a critical period |
Retainers are billed monthly at our published lead-engineer rate ($35 to $49 an hour) with a three-month minimum, and include availability on Slack between sessions for urgent questions. A full-time CTO in the US typically costs several times more once salary, equity and benefits are counted. When the roadmap needs engineers, the same person can lead a dedicated team from our Lahore and Sialkot offices, from $4,000 per senior engineer per month.
How an engagement starts
- Intro call (30 minutes): your goals, the current state of product and team, and what a good first quarter looks like.
- Technical assessment (first two weeks): codebase, infrastructure, security, team and vendor review, with a written report.
- Roadmap: a prioritised plan for the next two quarters with costs and hiring needs.
- Ongoing: regular sessions with you and the team, decision records, and a monthly written update.
- Hand-over: when you hire a full-time CTO, we help recruit them and hand over documentation and context.
Fractional CTO vs the alternatives
| Option | Cost | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional CTO | $1,100 to $1,600 to $4,700 a month | Senior judgement without a full-time salary | Limited hours; best with a clear agenda |
| Full-time CTO | Executive salary, equity and benefits | Full commitment and ownership | Hard to hire early; expensive before product-market fit |
| Agency lead only | Included in a project | Knows the build well | Conflict of interest when judging the agency's own work |
| Technical advisor | Equity or occasional fees | Useful network and perspective | Rarely hands-on with code or hiring |
What we have led
Our lead engineers have run platform rebuilds beside live legacy systems, such as the Paint Nite booking platform, multi-integration SaaS products such as TamTracker, and AI platforms such as GovDoc AI. That experience is what a fractional CTO brings to the table: patterns that worked, and mistakes we will not let you repeat.
