Custom web application development services for portals, platforms and internal tools

We build web applications that replace spreadsheets, connect systems and serve thousands of users: customer portals, marketplaces, dashboards, booking systems and internal tools, designed around the workflow rather than a template.

Short answer

Custom web application development is designing and building browser-based software for a specific business workflow, such as a customer portal, marketplace or internal operations tool. Innovation Insight delivers web applications with React, Next.js, Node and Python, from $15k for a focused MVP in 8 to 14 weeks to $150k or more for a multi-role platform, with fixed-price or monthly team options and full code ownership.

Why custom instead of off-the-shelf

Off-the-shelf software is the right choice when your process is standard. Custom web applications pay off when the workflow is what makes your business different, when you are stitching four tools together with spreadsheets and manual copying, or when per-seat licences cost more each year than building would. A custom application fits the way your team actually works, connects directly to your other systems, and becomes an asset you own rather than a subscription you rent.

Our technology stack

LayerDefault choiceWhen we choose differently
Front endReact with Next.js and TypeScript, Tailwind CSSAngular or Vue when your team already uses them
Back endNode.js with NestJS, or Python with FastAPI or Django.NET or Laravel to match an existing codebase
DatabasePostgreSQLMongoDB for document-heavy data, Redis for queues and caching
Real-timeWebSockets or server-sent eventsManaged services such as Pusher or Ably at scale
HostingAWS, Azure, GCP or Vercel with infrastructure as codeYour existing cloud and conventions
QualityAutomated tests, CI/CD, preview environments, error trackingFormal QA and load testing for high-traffic launches

Proof from recent projects

  • Paint Nite: a national events platform rebuilt on NestJS and Next.js beside the legacy system, covering booking, checkout and operations.
  • An influencer marketplace with creator discovery, real-time messaging, deals, an ad server and an operations console.
  • ScoreHub: a social sports prediction platform with GraphQL, live scores for ten leagues, leaderboards and badges.
  • Seek My Service: a two-sided services marketplace with a credit-based vendor economy.

What it costs

ScopeWhat you getRangeTimeline
Internal tool or portal MVPOne core workflow, two roles, integrations with one or two systems$15k to $30k6 to 10 weeks
Customer-facing web applicationSeveral workflows, payments, notifications, admin panel$30k to $70k3 to 5 months
Multi-role platform or marketplaceSeveral user types, real-time features, complex integrations, analytics$70k to $150k+5 to 8 months

Estimates are written and fixed after a discovery phase. You can also hire a dedicated team from $4,000 per engineer per month when the roadmap is still moving. Maintenance retainers start at $1,500 a month.

Most web application budgets are decided by integrations and roles, not screens. Counting the systems your app must talk to and the types of users it serves gives a better early estimate than counting pages.

How a project runs

  1. Discovery (1 to 2 weeks): workflow mapping, user roles, integrations, data model, clickable prototype, fixed estimate.
  2. Design: UX flows and UI in Figma, reviewed with real users.
  3. Build: two-week sprints, demo every sprint, staging environment from week two.
  4. Launch: data migration, training, monitoring, a hypercare period with the same engineers.
  5. Support and growth: retainer or dedicated team for new features.

FAQ

Questions we get asked a lot.

What is the difference between a website and a web application?

A website mainly presents information. A web application lets users do work: log in, enter and change data, collaborate, pay and see results that depend on who they are. Web applications need a back end, a database and security design that websites usually do not.

Can you work with our existing systems?

Yes. Most of our web applications integrate with CRMs, ERPs, payment providers, accounting tools or legacy databases through APIs, webhooks or scheduled sync.

Do you build progressive web apps?

Yes. When offline use or installation on phones matters, we build the web application as a PWA so one codebase serves desktop and mobile.

Who owns the source code?

You do, from the first commit. Code lives in your repository and IP is assigned in the contract.

Can you take over a half-finished web app?

Yes. We audit the code and infrastructure in one to two weeks, then tell you honestly whether to continue, refactor or rebuild parts of it.

Do you offer fixed-price web application development?

Yes, for defined scope after discovery. For evolving products we recommend time and materials or a dedicated team so you can change priorities every sprint.
