What an MVP is, and what it is not
A minimum viable product is the smallest thing you can put in front of real users to learn whether the idea works. It is not a cheap version of the full product, and it is not a prototype that gets thrown away. Hourly rates are $25 to $49. A typical MVP squad is one senior full-stack engineer, one designer for the first half, a QA engineer for the last third, and a part-time project manager.
How we run an MVP
- Discovery. Who the user is, what they must be able to do, what we will measure, and what is explicitly out. Output: prototype, architecture outline, fixed estimate.
- Design. Screens and a small design system, tested with five to eight target users before code.
- Sprint one. Environments, CI/CD, authentication and a walking skeleton of the core flow. You see working software in 10 days.
- Sprints two to six. The core journey, then payments, admin and the instrumentation you need to learn.
- Launch. Production release or store submission, analytics dashboards, and a two-week stabilisation window.
- Decide. With real usage data, extend the team, pivot, or stop. There is no lock-in either way.
Technology choices for MVPs
Speed and future-proofing pull in opposite directions; we pick the boring, well-supported option. For web MVPs that is usually Next.js with TypeScript, a Node.js or Python API, PostgreSQL, and Vercel or AWS. For mobile it is Flutter or React Native, Firebase or a small backend, and store-ready CI. For AI features we start with a hosted model and retrieval over your data, with an evaluation set from day one so the feature can be trusted.

Mistakes that make MVPs expensive
- Building for scale you do not have yet. Design for it, do not build for it.
- Three user roles when one would prove the idea.
- Custom design for every screen. A design system is faster and looks more consistent.
- No analytics. If you cannot see what users do, the MVP cannot teach you anything.
- Hiring a junior team for the rate. A senior engineer at $45 an hour who ships in 10 weeks is cheaper than a junior at $20 who needs 20 weeks and a rewrite.
After the MVP
If the product works, the same engineers continue as a dedicated team on a monthly basis, so nothing is lost in a hand-over. If it does not, you keep a documented codebase, a design system and the data, and you owe us nothing further. Either way the code, accounts and IP were yours from the first commit.
A worked example: a marketplace MVP
Take a two-sided marketplace for local services: customers post a job, providers quote, the customer picks one and pays through the platform. The full vision includes ratings, chat, scheduling, provider verification, dispute handling and a mobile app. The MVP is the customer web app with job posting and payment, a provider web app with quoting, email notifications and a basic admin view. Ratings, chat and the mobile app wait until real transactions prove the model.

Measuring whether the MVP worked
Before launch we agree two or three metrics that would prove the idea: activation rate, repeat use within 30 days, paid conversion, or a domain-specific number such as jobs posted per week. The instrumentation to measure them is part of the build, and the first post-launch review, two to four weeks in, is where the decision to extend, pivot or stop gets made with data rather than opinion.
