Short answer

A marketplace app costs $15k to $45k for a focused web MVP and $50k to $150k or more for a full two-sided platform with a senior offshore team at $25 to $49 an hour. A booking marketplace like Airbnb on web and mobile lands around $37k to $67k in 11 to 20 weeks; a product marketplace like Etsy around $38k to $69k. Two-sided onboarding, search, payouts, reviews, admin and trust and safety set the price.

How much does marketplace app development cost?

ScopeWhat is includedCostTimeline
Discovery and design sprintBoth user journeys, data model, payment flow design, prototype, fixed estimate$3k to $8k1 to 2 weeks
Marketplace MVP (web)Buyer and seller accounts, listings, search, messaging, payments with payouts, admin$15k to $45k10 to 16 weeks
Booking marketplace, web and mobileAirbnb-style: listings with photos and maps, calendar booking, payouts, chat$37k to $67k11 to 20 weeks
Product marketplace, web and mobileEtsy-style: seller shops, catalogue search, cart, payouts, reviews, feed$38k to $69k11 to 21 weeks
Full marketplace platformSeveral roles, disputes, promotions, analytics, mobile apps, scale and polish$50k to $150k+4 to 8 months

These are Innovation Insight's published ranges and calculator outputs at $25 to $49 an hour. Marketplaces cost more than single-sided apps for one reason: every feature exists twice. A seller sees a listing editor where a buyer sees a search result; a buyer pays where a seller is paid out; and an admin has to see both. Keep that in mind when you compare quotes that look low.

Two worked examples

A booking marketplace like Airbnb

Hosts list properties with photos and a map, guests search by location and dates, book and pay, the two sides chat, hosts are paid out after the stay, and admins moderate everything. On web and mobile with a custom design and one integration the MVP is $37k to $67k over 11 to 20 weeks with 2 senior full-stack engineers, a mobile engineer, a part-time designer, QA and a delivery lead; the full product with every edge case and admin tool is $80k to $147k. The cost to build an app like Airbnb guide walks through it in detail.

Maps and location54$1.5k to $2.1k
1 third-party integration36$1k to $1.4k
Project management, QA and release (35%)398$11k to $15k

A product marketplace like Etsy

Sellers open shops and list products, buyers search and browse a feed, pay in one checkout across several sellers, review purchases and message sellers, and the platform pays sellers out net of its fee. The MVP is $38k to $69k over 11 to 21 weeks; see the cost to build a marketplace app like Etsy guide for the breakdown.

A services marketplace

Services marketplaces replace the catalogue with requests and proposals: a client posts a job, matching providers are notified and bid, and the client accepts one. Seek My Service works this way, with vendors buying Stripe credits to submit proposals, five user roles and notifications by SMS, email and in-app message; CareFlair connects NDIS participants in Australia with support workers through geospatial search, real-time messaging, bookings and worker screening checks. Both are closer to the Airbnb preset than the Etsy one in scope.

What a two-sided marketplace needs and what each part costs

ComponentWhat it involvesTypical effort with us
Onboarding for both sidesBuyer sign-up, seller or provider verification, profile and listing setup, identity checks where needed2 to 4 weeks
Listings and searchStructured listings with photos, categories, filters, map or location search, availability2 to 4 weeks
Booking or cart and checkoutCalendar or inventory, pricing rules, fees, taxes, order states2 to 3 weeks
Payments with payoutsStripe Connect accounts, split payments, platform fee, refunds, payout schedule, reconciliation2 to 3 weeks
Messaging and notificationsBuyer-seller chat, email, SMS and push, with abuse reporting2 to 3 weeks
Reviews and ratingsTwo-way reviews after completion, moderation, display rules1 week
Admin and operationsApprove sellers, moderate listings, handle disputes, refunds, reports2 to 3 weeks
Trust and safetyVerification, fraud rules, content moderation, blocking, dispute flow1 to 3 weeks, ongoing after launch

Payouts deserve their own line because they are where marketplaces most often go wrong. Stripe Connect handles onboarding sellers, holding funds, taking your platform fee and paying out, which is far cheaper than building any of that. Its published fees are below. If sellers are in several countries, cross-border payouts and currency conversion add to every transaction, and some countries are not supported at all, so check the list before you promise global launch.

Running costs for a marketplace

CostPublished priceSource, checked October 2026
Card processing (Stripe, US domestic)2.9% + 30¢ per successful transactionstripe.com/pricing
Stripe Connect, platform sets its own pricing$2 per active connected account a month; 0.25% + 25¢ per payout; 0.25% funds routing; instant payouts 1%stripe.com/connect/pricing
Stripe Connect, Stripe-handled pricingNo account or per-payout fee; instant payouts 1% and cross-border payouts from 0.25% still applystripe.com/connect/pricing
Identity verification (Stripe Identity)$1.50 per document and selfie verificationstripe.com/pricing
Fraud screening (Stripe Radar)From $10 a month or $0.05 per screened transactionstripe.com/pricing
Hosting, search, email, SMS, mapsTens to a few hundred dollars a month at MVP stageGrows with traffic; Twilio, SendGrid and map providers meter by use
Maintenance and small improvements$1.5k to $8k per monthInnovation Insight retainer; or a dedicated engineer from $4,000 a month

Model your take rate against these fees early. A 10 percent commission on a $40 service after 2.9% + 30¢ processing, a per-payout fee and a $2 monthly active account charge leaves less than many founders assume, and marketplaces with small basket sizes often need a buyer fee or a seller subscription to work.

What drives marketplace app development cost

  • Platforms. A web MVP is the cheapest start; adding iOS and Android for one side adds the mobile platform cost, and a second app for providers adds more.
  • Transaction model. Simple one-off payments are cheapest; bookings with deposits and cancellations, subscriptions, or multi-seller carts each add weeks.
  • Matching. Search and filters are standard; proximity matching, availability matching and recommendation feeds are extra.
  • Trust and safety. Identity checks, licence verification, background checks and content moderation each add integrations and admin tooling.
  • Geography. Several currencies, tax regimes and payout countries multiply the payment work.
  • Liquidity features. Promotions, featured listings, referral credits and seller analytics are usually version two but founders often want them in version one.

Timeline and team for a marketplace MVP

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: discovery for both sides, payment and fee design, prototype, Stripe Connect account structure.
  2. Weeks 3 to 8: accounts, listings, search, the booking or checkout flow, payments and payouts end to end in test mode.
  3. Weeks 9 to 14: messaging, reviews, notifications, admin and moderation tools, mobile app if in scope.
  4. Weeks 15 to 20: closed beta with real sellers, payout reconciliation, dispute handling, launch.

Our marketplace development page lists the stack we use and recent platforms. For comparison, a US agency at $100 to $200 an hour would quote $131k to $353k for the Airbnb-style MVP above.

How to reduce marketplace development cost

  1. Launch one side manually. Many marketplaces start with sellers onboarded by hand and a spreadsheet behind the scenes.
  2. Pick one city, category or vertical so search and matching can be simple.
  3. Use Stripe Connect or a similar provider for the whole payment lifecycle rather than building any of it.
  4. Ship web first; add mobile for the side that needs it most, usually providers who work on the move.
  5. Make trust and safety a process with tools, not a feature set; a review queue beats an automated system you cannot tune yet.

How much does it cost to build a marketplace app?

$15k to $45k for a focused web MVP and $50k to $150k or more for a full platform. A booking marketplace on web and mobile is about $37k to $67k; a product marketplace about $38k to $69k.

Why do marketplaces cost more than other apps?

Every feature exists for two sides, plus payouts to sellers, two-way reviews, moderation and dispute handling that single-sided apps do not need.

How do marketplace payouts work and what do they cost?

Most platforms use Stripe Connect: sellers onboard to connected accounts, the platform takes its fee from each payment and Stripe pays sellers out. Stripe lists $2 per active account a month and 0.25% + 25¢ per payout when the platform sets its own pricing (checked October 2026).

How long does a marketplace MVP take?

11 to 20 weeks for a web and mobile booking marketplace; a web-only MVP in one vertical can ship in 10 to 14 weeks.

Should we build the mobile app first?

Usually not. Launch on web, learn which side needs mobile most, then build that app. Providers who work on the move are often the first.
