Short answer

A marketplace app like Etsy costs about $38k to $69k to build as an MVP and $82k to $150k as a full platform, with a senior offshore team. The MVP takes 11 to 21 weeks and covers web and mobile apps with seller onboarding and shop management, product listings, search and categories, checkout, Stripe Connect payouts, buyer-seller messaging, reviews and an admin console. Priced at US agency rates, the MVP is $135k to $365k for the same scope.

What an Etsy-style marketplace includes

Etsy is a product marketplace: many independent sellers, each with a shop, selling physical goods to buyers who pay the platform, which then pays the seller. Unlike a single-brand store, the platform never holds stock, so the work moves to onboarding sellers, keeping listings honest, splitting money correctly and sorting out what happens when an order goes wrong. The same model fits any category of goods, from crafts to vintage to parts.

  • Buyer side: search and browse by category, product pages with photo galleries and variants, cart and checkout, order tracking, messages, reviews, favourites.
  • Seller side: identity and bank onboarding, shop profile, listing management with variants and stock, orders and shipping, messages, payouts and statements, shop analytics.
  • Platform: fees and payouts, search ranking, reviews and ratings, disputes and refunds, content moderation, admin.

What is in the MVP

We modelled it as a web app plus a mobile app with a custom design. Sellers manage shops on a computer and product pages need to rank in search, while buyers increasingly browse on a phone. It includes:

  • User accounts and roles for buyers, sellers and admins.
  • Search and filters across categories, price, location and shipping options.
  • File and media uploads for product photos and shop banners.
  • Push and email notifications for orders, messages and shipping updates.
  • Admin panel for sellers, listings, categories, fees and disputes.
  • One-off payments: cart, checkout and refunds.
  • Marketplace payouts: Stripe Connect accounts, fee splits, transfers and statements.
  • In-app chat between buyers and sellers, with order context.
  • Social feed and comments, used here for reviews, ratings and shop updates.
  • Dashboards and reports for sellers and for the platform.
  • Two third-party integrations: Stripe Connect and a shipping or email provider.

Seller onboarding and shop management

The seller side is where marketplace MVPs blow their budget, because it is a complete small-business tool. A seller needs to open a shop, verify identity and bank details, create listings with variants such as size and colour, set stock and shipping rules, see orders, mark them shipped, answer messages and read statements. Keep the first version narrow: single-variant listings, flat-rate shipping and a simple order list. Bulk tools, CSV import, promotions and advertising come after you have sellers asking for them.

Stripe Connect payouts

Do not build payments. Stripe Connect handles the hard parts of a marketplace: onboarding sellers with the identity checks each country requires, charging the buyer, holding the funds, taking the platform fee and paying the seller on a schedule. Express accounts give sellers a hosted onboarding flow and a dashboard, so your team builds the fee logic and statements rather than the compliance. Connect charges per transaction and per active connected account on top of standard processing; the figures are on Stripe's pricing page and should be modelled into the platform's take rate before you set it.

The engineering that remains is still real: idempotent order creation, a ledger of what each party is owed, refunds that reverse the fee split correctly, and reconciliation against Stripe's reports. Get the ledger right in the MVP; it is the one part that is painful to change once money has moved.

Search, categories and reviews

Buyers find products through search, so the category tree, attributes and ranking are product decisions as much as engineering ones. PostgreSQL full-text search with good indexes is enough for the first tens of thousands of listings; a dedicated engine such as OpenSearch or Meilisearch comes later for typo tolerance, facets and ranking by sales. Reviews must be tied to a completed order, with a window for the buyer to leave one and a right of reply for the seller, or they become a moderation problem within weeks.

Disputes, refunds and trust

Something will go wrong with a share of orders: item not received, not as described, damaged. The MVP needs a case flow for this, even if an admin handles it by hand: buyer opens a case, seller responds, admin decides, refund issues through Stripe and the fee split reverses. Card chargebacks arrive through Stripe as well and need evidence from the order record. Plan the operations team cost alongside the software, because the dispute rate, not the feature list, determines how many people a marketplace needs.

We built Seek My Service, a two-sided services marketplace where vendors buy credits through Stripe to bid on client requests, with a NestJS API of more than 80 endpoints, a React admin dashboard, a Next.js public site and notifications over SMS, email and in-app. The role model, the admin control plane and the notification preferences carry straight over to a product marketplace.

Ongoing costs after launch

  • Payment processing plus Connect fees on every order, which scale with sales rather than users.
  • Image storage and a CDN for product photos, the largest storage line in most marketplaces.
  • Email and push delivery for order and message notifications.
  • Search infrastructure once you leave PostgreSQL for a search engine.
  • People: seller support and dispute handling, which is usually the biggest cost after year one.
  • Hosting, monitoring and a maintenance retainer of $1.5k to $8k per month. See what it costs to run an app.

Ways to bring the price down

  1. Pick a category and a country. One currency, one tax regime and one shipping model remove a third of the edge cases.
  2. Launch the web app first; sellers need it, and product pages earn search traffic. Add the mobile app for buyers once sales justify it.
  3. Use Stripe Connect Express with hosted onboarding rather than custom KYC flows.
  4. Start with single-variant listings and flat-rate shipping.
  5. Handle disputes by hand in the admin panel before automating any of it.

How much does it cost to build a marketplace app like Etsy?

About $38k to $69k for an MVP with seller onboarding, shops and listings, search, checkout, Stripe Connect payouts, messaging, reviews and dispute handling, and $82k to $150k for a full platform, with a senior offshore team.

How long does it take to build a marketplace app?

11 to 21 weeks for the MVP. Recruit the first sellers during the build so the marketplace has listings on launch day.

How do marketplace payouts work?

The buyer pays the platform through Stripe, Stripe holds the funds, the platform fee is deducted and the seller receives a transfer on a schedule. Stripe Connect handles seller onboarding, identity checks and the transfers.

What take rate should a product marketplace charge?

That is a business decision, but model Stripe's processing and Connect fees first so the take rate covers them. Keep fees in configuration; you will change them.

Web or mobile first for a marketplace?

Web first. Sellers manage shops on a computer and product pages bring search traffic. The buyer mobile app follows once there is enough inventory to browse.
