Hiring Developers in Australia vs Offshore: Full Cost, Time Zones and When Local Wins

The real cost of an Australian developer (salary, 12% super, payroll tax) vs an offshore engineer, time-zone overlap, and when to hire locally.

Short answer

An Australian software developer on the A$135,000 average salary (Hays, 2026) costs about A$151,000 a year once the 12 percent superannuation guarantee is added, more with payroll tax, recruiting and equipment. A senior offshore engineer from Innovation Insight costs $4,000 to $6,600 (USD) a month, all-inclusive. Offshore wins on cost and speed to start; local hiring wins for roles that need in-person presence, security clearance or deep ownership of your product.

The fully loaded cost of an Australian developer

Salary is only the first line. The table below builds up the annual cost of one developer at the Australian average reported by Hays in May 2026 (A$135,000). Government data agrees: Jobs and Skills Australia puts median full-time weekly earnings for software and applications programmers at A$2,537, about A$132,000 a year.

Before recruiting and payroll tax, the loaded cost is roughly A$156,000 to A$166,000 a year, or A$13,000 to A$13,800 a month. At an assumed rate of US$0.65 to the Australian dollar, that is about US$8,400 to US$9,000 a month. A senior engineer from us costs $4,000 to $6,600 a month including equipment, payroll, HR, a delivery lead and a two-week replacement guarantee.

Our full range runs from $2,600 a month for mid-level specialists to $5,600 to $7,800 for leads (overall band $3,000 to $7,800); rates by role are on the hire page, and the offshore team cost calculator lets you model a whole team.

Time-zone arithmetic for Australian teams

Pakistan is UTC+5 all year. Australia has three mainland zones and only some states use daylight saving, so the overlap changes by city and by season. The table assumes our engineers work a 9:00 to 18:00 day in Lahore; an early shift starting at 7:00 adds two hours of overlap for east-coast clients and is what we normally agree.

CityAhead of LahoreLahore 9:00 isOverlap with a 9:00 to 17:00 local day (standard Lahore hours)With a 7:00 Lahore start
Perth (AWST, no DST)3 hours12:0012:00 to 17:00 (5 hours)10:00 to 17:00 (7 hours)
Brisbane (AEST, no DST)5 hours14:0014:00 to 17:00 (3 hours)12:00 to 17:00 (5 hours)
Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra in winter (AEST)5 hours14:0014:00 to 17:00 (3 hours)12:00 to 17:00 (5 hours)
Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra in summer (AEDT)6 hours15:0015:00 to 17:00 (2 hours)13:00 to 17:00 (4 hours)
Adelaide (ACST/ACDT)4.5 or 5.5 hours13:30 or 14:302.5 to 3.5 hours4.5 to 5.5 hours

Four to five shared hours is enough for a daily stand-up, a design or code review and same-day answers to blocking questions. It is not enough for a team that pairs all day or for on-call during Australian business mornings; for those, a local engineer or a late-morning handover routine is the better plan.

When hiring locally is the better choice

  • Security clearance or onshore data requirements: some government and defence work requires Australian citizens with clearance, or no offshore access at all. No offshore vendor can meet that.
  • Your first technical leader: the person who owns architecture, hiring and the roadmap should usually be an employee near the founders. Offshore engineers work best with a clear owner on your side.
  • Heavy in-person work: hardware labs, on-site customer research, or a product that depends on daily whiteboard sessions.
  • Long-term core platform knowledge: if a role will hold critical context for five years or more, the higher cost of an employee buys continuity.

When offshore is the better choice

  • Speed: you need engineers next fortnight, not next quarter.
  • Defined scope: an MVP, a rebuild, a mobile app or an integration with a clear finish line.
  • Variable demand: you need four engineers for six months and one after launch.
  • Skills you cannot find locally at your budget: AI, DevOps, Flutter or QA automation as a part-time or short-term need.

The hybrid most Australian startups end up with

The pattern that works best is one or two local people who own product and architecture, plus an offshore squad that builds. The local lead writes acceptance criteria, reviews pull requests in the overlap window and talks to customers; the offshore team ships to staging daily. A local senior plus a three-person offshore squad costs about the same per month as two to three local hires, and puts four people on the build instead of two or three. If you do not yet have that technical owner, a fractional CTO can fill the gap for $1,100 to $4,700 a month.

A worked comparison: a team of four for a year

Take a startup that needs two senior full-stack engineers, one mobile engineer and a QA engineer for twelve months. Using the Hays average of A$135,000 for each developer role and adding 12 percent super, the salary line alone is about A$605,000 before payroll tax, recruiting, equipment and office. At an assumed US$0.65 per Australian dollar that is roughly US$393,000. The same four roles as an offshore dedicated team at our published senior rates cost $4,000 to $6,600 each a month, which over the year comes to roughly half to four fifths of the local salary and super line alone, with recruiting, equipment and replacement included rather than added on top.

The figure that does not appear in either column is your own management time. An offshore team needs a clear product owner on your side who writes acceptance criteria and reviews work in the overlap window. Without that person, the saving disappears into rework. Our guide to software project milestones and acceptance criteria shows how to structure the work so it does not.

Questions to ask any offshore provider

  • Which hours will the team work, and is the early shift for Australian clients written into the contract?
  • Who are the named engineers, and can we interview them before they start?
  • Where is production data hosted, who can access it, and how is access logged?
  • What happens if an engineer leaves: how fast is the replacement and who pays for the handover?
  • Who owns the code, and does it live in our repository from day one?
