Short answer

A fitness app costs about $23k to $42k to build as a workout and training MVP with a senior offshore team, and $46k to $84k as a full product. A GPS tracking app like Strava costs $28k to $51k and a calorie tracker like MyFitnessPal $26k to $48k. Plan for app store commission on subscriptions (15 to 30 percent), video delivery and health-data sync on top of the build.

Three kinds of fitness app, three different budgets

"Fitness app" covers products that share a subscription screen and very little else. A workout app sells a library of classes and plans, so its cost sits in video, content tools and subscriptions. A GPS activity tracker records runs and rides in the background, often with no signal, and its cost sits in recording, maps and a social feed. A nutrition tracker is a search engine over a food database with a daily diary, and its cost sits in data licensing, barcode scanning and offline logging. Pick the type first; the price follows.

Calorie and nutrition tracker like MyFitnessPal$26k to $48k10 to 18 weeks$53k to $98kFood database and barcode lookups, diary that works offline, goals, premium tier

All three are mobile-first and assume one cross-platform codebase for iOS and Android. US agency equivalents for the same scope are $82k to $222k, $99k to $268k and $93k to $253k. For the detail on the other two, read our cost to build an app like Strava and cost to build an app like MyFitnessPal.

What is in the workout app MVP

  • Accounts with email plus Apple and Google sign-in; Apple's guideline 4.8 asks for a privacy-focused login option whenever you offer a third-party one, and Sign in with Apple meets it.
  • A workout library: on-demand video classes, exercise demonstrations and programmes that open a new week of sessions as the member progresses.
  • Progress: completed sessions, streaks, personal records and body measurements, with charts.
  • Subscriptions through Apple and Google in-app purchase, with a free tier and a trial.
  • Push notifications for reminders and new programmes.
  • An admin panel to upload videos, build programmes, tag content and manage subscribers.
  • Two integrations: Apple HealthKit and Android Health Connect, so workouts appear in the health apps people already use.

App store commission on subscriptions

Digital subscriptions sold inside an iOS or Android app go through Apple's and Google's billing, and the commission is the biggest running cost most fitness apps have. These are the published rates, checked October 2026:

Store and caseCommissionSource
Apple, auto-renewable subscription, first year of paid service30 percent (you receive 70 percent)Apple, auto-renewable subscriptions
Apple, after a subscriber accumulates one year of paid service15 percent (you receive 85 percent)Apple, auto-renewable subscriptions
Apple Small Business Program (up to $1 million proceeds in the prior calendar year)15 percent from the first billing cycleApple, Small Business Program
Google Play, auto-renewing subscriptions15 percent; for users in the US, UK, EEA, Australia and Japan, shown as 10 percent plus a 5 percent billing feeGoogle Play Console Help, service fees

Two consequences for the budget. First, a new fitness app under the Small Business Program pays 15 percent on both stores, which makes a $12.99 monthly plan worth about $11.04 before tax. Second, free trials do not count towards Apple's year of paid service, so a churn-heavy app pays the higher rate for longer if it is not enrolled. Not everything must go through Apple: guideline 3.1.3(d) lets real-time person-to-person services between two people, such as one-to-one fitness training over video, use other payment methods, while one-to-few and one-to-many classes must use in-app purchase. Check the App Store Review Guidelines for your exact model before you design the paywall.

Running costs to plan for

  • Video hosting and delivery. On Cloudflare Stream's published pricing (checked October 2026), storage is $5 a month per 1,000 minutes and delivery is $1 per 1,000 minutes watched, with encoding free. A library of 200 thirty-minute classes is 6,000 minutes, about $30 a month to store. If 10,000 subscribers each watch eight hours a month, that is 4.8 million minutes, about $4,800 a month to deliver. Delivery, not storage, is the line that grows.
  • Health-data sync. Apple HealthKit and Android Health Connect have no fee, but they are two separate integrations with different permission models. Google states that the Google Fit APIs are supported only until the end of 2026, so new Android work should target Health Connect. Wearable aggregator services that connect Garmin, Fitbit, Oura and others through one API charge per connected user; price that against building two or three direct integrations.
  • Subscription infrastructure. Receipt validation, renewal webhooks from both stores, grace periods and refunds are a small system of their own. A subscription service such as RevenueCat replaces most of it; compare its fee with the hours in the subscriptions line above.
  • Push and email for reminders, plus analytics. Low cost at launch, then proportional to active users.
  • Hosting, monitoring and a maintenance retainer of $1.5k to $8k per month. OS releases every September break something in background sync or health permissions. See what it costs to run an app.

AI features in fitness apps

AI coaching, form checks from the camera and generated workout plans are the most requested additions. A plan generator that turns a goal, equipment list and schedule into a programme from your own exercise library is modest work. Rep counting or form feedback from the camera is computer vision on the device, which needs testing across body types, lighting and phones. AI features on our price list run $8k to $60k depending on scope. Our Toned.ai case study is a fitness product built around its AI features: a team of three engineers, an ML engineer and a designer took it from discovery to launch in five months.

How to reduce the cost

  1. Ship one app type. A workout app with GPS runs and a food diary is three products and three budgets.
  2. Use one cross-platform codebase (Flutter or React Native) and keep native code to health permissions and background recording.
  3. Start with HealthKit and Health Connect only. Add Garmin or other wearables when users ask for them.
  4. Use a managed video service instead of building a transcoding pipeline.
  5. Leave social features, live classes and a web app for the second release unless they are the pitch.

We build these products as part of our fitness app development service. For the features and architecture behind the numbers, read fitness app features and tech stack, and for the general picture see mobile app development cost. Our mobile MVPs run $20k to $45k on the pricing page.

How much does it cost to build a fitness app?

About $23k to $42k for a workout app MVP with a video library, programmes, progress tracking, subscriptions and health-data sync, and $46k to $84k for a full product, with a senior offshore team. GPS trackers run $28k to $51k and nutrition trackers $26k to $48k at MVP stage.

How long does it take to build a fitness app?

10 to 18 weeks for a workout app MVP, including App Store and Google Play review. Content production for the video library usually runs in parallel and is often the real critical path.

How much do Apple and Google take from fitness app subscriptions?

Apple takes 30 percent in the first year of a subscriber's paid service and 15 percent after that, or 15 percent from the start for Small Business Program members. Google Play takes 15 percent on auto-renewing subscriptions. Rates checked October 2026.

Do I need Google Fit integration?

No. Google says the Google Fit APIs are supported only until the end of 2026. Build Android health sync on Health Connect, and use Apple HealthKit on iOS.

What is the most expensive part of running a fitness app?

Usually store commission, then video delivery once the audience grows. Hosting and APIs are small by comparison until you add live classes or heavy AI use.
