Cost to Build a Social Media App Like Instagram in 2026
Budget $29k to $53k for a social MVP with a feed, media pipeline, stories, DMs and moderation, plus the timeline and the infrastructure bill as users grow.

Short answer
A social media app like Instagram costs about $29k to $53k to build as an MVP and $59k to $108k as a full product, with a senior offshore team. The MVP takes 10 to 19 weeks and covers profiles and follows, a photo and video feed with likes and comments, a transcoding and CDN media pipeline, stories, direct messages, search, notifications and a moderation console. A US-based team would bill $103k to $277k for the same scope.
What an Instagram-style social app includes
Instagram is a feed of photos and short videos from people you follow, plus the things that keep people posting: likes, comments, stories that disappear, direct messages and discovery. The screens are familiar, which is why founders underestimate it. The expensive parts are the media pipeline that makes a video play instantly on any phone, the feed that stays fast when a popular account posts, and the moderation that every app store and regulator now requires.
- Member app: sign-up and profile, follow and followers, feed, post with photos and video, likes and comments, stories, direct messages, search and explore, notifications, settings and privacy.
- Media pipeline: upload, image resizing, video transcoding into several qualities, thumbnails, CDN delivery.
- Feed: timeline generation, ranking, caching, pagination, deduplication.
- Trust and safety: report and block, automated screening, moderation console, appeals, age gates.
- Platform: analytics, admin, GDPR export and deletion, growth features such as invites and contact matching.
How much does it cost to build a social media app?
| Scope | Cost with a senior offshore team | Timeline | US agency, same scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| MVP: feed, stories, DMs, chronological ranking | $29k to $53k | 10 to 19 weeks | $103k to $277k |
| Full product: ranked feed, reels, live, creator tools | $59k to $108k | 13 to 23 weeks | $211k to $571k |
What is in the MVP
The scope we priced is a mobile app with a premium design and GDPR requirements. Social apps compete on feel, so the design line is the larger one. It includes:
- User accounts and roles for members, moderators and admins, with public and private profiles.
- Social or SSO login with Apple and Google.
- Social feed and comments: posts, follows, likes, comments, stories and the timeline that assembles them.
- File and media uploads: the pipeline for photos and video, including transcoding and CDN delivery.
- In-app chat for direct messages, including sharing a post into a conversation.
- Search and filters across people, hashtags and places.
- Push and email notifications for follows, likes, comments and messages.
- Admin panel for moderation queues, reports, takedowns and appeals.
- Dashboards and reports: daily actives, posts per user, retention cohorts.
- GDPR requirements: consent, export, deletion and retention.
- One third-party integration: a media transcoding service or CDN.

How long does it take to build an app like Instagram?
10 to 19 weeks for the MVP with 2 senior mobile engineers, a designer (part-time), QA and a delivery lead. The first month goes on design and the media pipeline, because every other screen depends on posts existing. The feed, stories and DMs follow, and the last weeks go on moderation tooling, notifications and store review. A full product with ranked feeds, short video and creator tools is 13 to 23 weeks of work, and in practice it is added in releases after launch rather than built up front.
Feed ranking: chronological first, ranked later
A chronological feed from followed accounts is a query with a cache in front of it, and it is the right MVP. Precompute each member's timeline when their follows post (fan-out on write) for ordinary accounts and fall back to reading at request time for accounts with huge followings, cache the first pages in Redis, and paginate by cursor rather than offset. Ranked feeds that mix in recommended posts need engagement signals, a scoring model and an evaluation loop, and they only start to pay off once there is enough content that a chronological feed has gaps. Keep that in the full product.
The media pipeline: upload, transcode, CDN
Photos are resized into a few sizes and served from a CDN. Video is harder: the client uploads directly to object storage, a transcoding job produces several qualities plus a thumbnail, and playback uses adaptive streaming so a phone on a weak connection still plays. A managed video service does the transcoding and packaging for a per-minute price; building it on cloud transcoding services costs less per minute and more engineering. Either way, uploads should resume after a dropped connection, and the pipeline should strip metadata such as location from photos before they are public.
Stories, DMs and growth features
Stories are posts with an expiry, a separate tray and a viewer list, built on the same media pipeline; the work is in the full-screen viewer and the tap-and-hold interactions. Direct messages reuse the chat component with post sharing and reactions, and they are the feature that turns a feed into a daily habit. Growth features are small individually and large together: invite links, contact matching with the user's permission, suggested accounts after sign-up, deep links that open a post in the app and web previews for posts shared elsewhere. Include the first three in the MVP; without them a social app launches to an empty feed.
Moderation is not optional
Any app with user-generated content needs report and block on every profile, post, comment and message, automated screening of images and text at upload, a moderation console with queues and audit trails, and a way to appeal. Apple's App Store Review Guidelines require this before approval, and for EU users the Digital Services Act adds notice-and-action and transparency obligations. Beyond the tooling, moderators are an ongoing cost that scales with posts, and the policy that tells them what to remove has to exist before launch day.
Infrastructure cost grows with users
Social apps are cheap to host on day one and expensive at scale, because cost follows media and fan-out rather than sign-ups. Storage and CDN egress grow with every video posted and never shrink. Feed caches, notification volume and search indexes grow with activity. A popular account posting triggers writes to every follower's timeline. Design for this from the start with object storage, a CDN, a queue for fan-out and transcoding, and Redis in front of the feed, and keep an eye on the per-active-user cost each month. We wrote up the whole operations side in what it costs to run an app.
We built Score Hub, a social sports prediction platform with a personalised feed, comments and reactions, following, leaderboards and badges, live scores over WebSockets and five languages, on a NestJS GraphQL API with PostgreSQL and Redis caching. The feed, follow graph, notification and caching patterns there are the same ones a photo-sharing app needs.
The monthly bill after launch
- Media storage and CDN delivery, the biggest line and one that only grows.
- Video transcoding per minute uploaded, through a managed service or cloud jobs.
- Push notifications and email, scaling with likes, comments and messages.
- Automated screening per upload and a moderation team as the member count grows.
- Caches, queues and search infrastructure as activity rises.
- Hosting, monitoring and a maintenance retainer of $1.5k to $8k per month.
How to reduce the cost
- Launch with photos and short clips only; long video and live streaming multiply the pipeline cost.
- Ship a chronological feed with simple suggestions and add ranking once there is content to rank.
- Use a managed media service for transcoding and delivery at the start.
- Pick a niche community so the feed is full on day one; a general-purpose Instagram has no empty-feed solution.
- Build in Flutter or React Native and keep native modules to the camera and video player.

How long does it take to build an app like Instagram?
10 to 19 weeks for the MVP and 13 to 23 weeks for the full product, usually delivered as releases after launch.
How much does it cost to build a social media app of a different kind?
The same components apply to communities, creator platforms and niche networks. Remove video and the estimate drops; add live streaming or marketplace features and it rises. Open the calculator preset and change the features.
What makes a social app expensive to run?
Media storage and delivery, video transcoding, feed fan-out and notifications all scale with activity rather than with sign-ups, and moderation needs people as well as software.
Should the MVP have a ranked feed?
No. A chronological feed from followed accounts with suggested accounts at sign-up is enough to learn whether people post. Ranking needs data you will not have at launch.
Web or mobile first for a social app?
Mobile first, since posting happens on the phone's camera. Add a web app for shared post pages and search traffic once the app has content worth linking to.
